Project description:
Phase Revival: An Optical Harmonica is a kinetic installation created by Andrews&Lynch inspired by the physics of spectroscopy and molecules, using pendulating lenses and light to reveal the intriguing effects of phase and oscillation.

The rhythms and pitches in the sound design are derived from the motion of the 12 lenses, the frequencies of their movements related in the same way as the pitches of the harmonic series, transposed up eight octaves into the audible frequency spectrum.
Patterns and structures reveal themselves as time elapses, showing layer upon layer of detail, hidden within a seemingly simple structure.

The sound is not actually triggered by the pendulums, rather the sound and motion match through a delicate 'tuning' of the sculpture, with the sound created using the same principles of physics as the sculpture.

Phase Revival: An Optical Harmonica was made with support from the Royal Society of Chemistry, DARE and Oomlout.
