Aby Cohen
Aby Cohen is a Scenographer and art director, working on the creation and production of Theatre, Museology, Expography and Cinema projects. Aby is currently developing her PhD studies in Performing Arts/Scenography at ECA, USP – School Of Arts and Communication at University of Sao Paulo, following an M.A. with research dedicated to the practice and educational processes of Brazilian scenographers in the contemporary scene.
Aby graduated in Arts and Design at FAAP, San Paulo and started working in Theatre at the scenography department of the Theatrical Research Center at the Centro de Pesquisa Teatral, CPT – directed by Antunes Filho from 1992 to 1997, and then with Paidéia Theater Co. from 1999 to 2006.
Since 1992 Aby has also worked on numerous projects for a variety of independent theatre productions. In the Expography and Museology field she develops projects with diverse institutions in Brazil including SESC Pompeia, Sangari Institute, Israeli Cultural Center, The Museu da Casa Brasileira, Lasar Segall Museum, International Bienal of Arts of Sao Paulo, Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, Funarte.
Aby has also been developing international collaboration projects such as BienalFindelMundo in 2007 with Fundação Patagonia, Argentina; Bienal do Mercosul, 1999 and 2005 with various countries from Latin America and MixMax Brasil, 2012-2015 with Tropenmuseum, Holland.
Aby has been participating in the Prague Quadrennial representing Brazil since 1995. In 1999, she was co-curator and designer of the Brazilian Thematic Section and in 2011, as co-curator and designer of the Brazilian National Exhibition at PQ’11, and the exhibition was awarded with the Golden Triga.
Aby is a founder-member of CenografiaBrasil, a group that since 2002, gathers professionals from scenography and related areas to develop actions focused on reflection, debate and development of Brazilian scenography.
Aby has been a member of OISTAT since 2003, becoming a member of ABrIC, OISTATBr, and also a member of the OISTAT Education Commission.
