Ian Evans – Technical Director

Ian Evans Profile

Ian is the Senior Lecturer in Technical Studies and Production at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. He is the Award Leader for the BA Hons in Stage Management, module leader of the Lighting Design and Sound Design pathways of the MA in Theatre Design and Module leader for the MA in Stage and Event Management.

Ian started his working life as an engineering apprentice at the age of 16. His passion for the entertainment industry enabled him to combine these skills and build a career that spanned all aspects of entertainment industry, from theatre to large scale rock shows to even bigger outdoor festivals and events. Ian has had a variety of roles throughout his career including Sound Engineer, Sound Designer, Lighting Designer, Chief Electrician. Most of this work has been in many towns and cities throughout the United Kingdom but he has also worked extensively in Europe, predominately in Germany.

With these skills and experiences he eventually gained full time employment as the Technical Manager at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. This was the perfect opportunity to give Ian stability after many years of touring and to raise his two children. This also allowed him to develop as a practitioner within the industry and naturally led to a career as an educator. During this time Ian has set up a successful events company called Limegreen Events, whose mission is to aid the development of undergraduate students and graduates. He has also worked as Technical Director for the UK Schools Exhibition at the Prague Quadrennial 2003, Technical Director for Scenofest 2007 and Advisor for Scenofest 2011. He was Technical Director for the UK National Exhibition of Design for Performance ‘Transformation and Revelation’ and he is Technical Director for the forthcoming World Stage Design and Scenofest 2013. In April 2012 Ian was elected as the new Chair for the Education Commission of the International Organisation of Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians (OISTAT).
