Project description:
‘Le petit violon’ is a play for children written by Jean Claude Grumberg. The play tells the story of street vendor Leo who believes to possess the secret of happiness: learning to be alone, or is it learning not to be alone?
A traveling circus directed by a fierce clown brings little deaf-mute Sarah into the life of Leo who decides to adopt the little girl. With Leo's love, Sarah regains confidence in life. She learns to feel the music when Leo plays the little violin.
The set design for ‘Le petit violon’ stages the story of Leo in an anonymous urban context. The shades of grey make the main character visible by providing him with a positive difference. Leo may be lonely, but he is the only one with a colorful moving house in this dull urban landscape.
The design provides the possibility of multiple spaces simultaneously. The folded shapes of the back buildings, the fence and the clear edges of the bushes were designed to enhance shadow effects.
