Project description:
Emptied Memories is an exploration into space and memory through theater and moving image that director/scenographer Chou, Tung-Yen has undertaken in recent years.
He creates a shifting and floating space by using "space" and "memory" as the core from which to start. The creation employs the technological integration of panoramic video, real-time image processing and sensors. Besides, as a remarkable milestone, 5 six-feet-tall Panels (wireless stage control system) are employed to develop the ever-changing stage spaces.

Emptied Memories put efforts not only on the exploration of techniques but also on narratives. During the show, the performer drives the external deformation of the material world, echoing the internal state, in order to present the organic flow of one's mind landscape.

These are video stills from the rehearsal footage which shows how the 3M-tall panel move and transform in time and space. We rehearse in a fully equipped theatre in order to work with the relation between light and shadow of the panels.

The self-moving panel creates a sense of dance since it forms the swing of light itself.

The scenographer and the team spend almost 3 years experiencing an experimental journey about body and space. Traveling with a panoramic camera, they visit various urban spaces and captured the dancer’s traces, with the distorted arc-shape unique perspective.

Inspired by Federico Garcia Lorca’s poem, “Nocturne of Emptied Space”, the scenographer started to explore the space and imagery, writing the theatre’s poems of memories by images, bodies, and technology.
