Project description:
A compilation of Stravinsky pieces in workshop for over three years, this Robert Lepage production, inspired by Vietnamese water puppetry, was set in a flooded orchestra pit to suggest the lake in the original Anderson fable. Opera singers, who manipulated character puppets, had their Chinese costumes duplicated: half-versions to be worn over wet suits when they sang immersed in water and full-length versions to be worn around the pool, in the court. All magical transformations occurred in front of the audience - including the Emperor's bed which became a skeleton of Death, from which he was resurrected. The collaborations of the entire design team produced a simple yet enchanting tale.
