01. The Bacchae (1 file with 2 photos submitted) The costume of Pentheas together with the five Bacchae costumes is proposed for submission for the exhibition, Designer: takis Production Title: The Bacchae By Euripides A new adaptation by Rosanna Lowe Performance Space: Northampton Chronicle & Echo Printing Press Rooms Theatre Company: Royal & Derngate Date: May – June 2012 Collaborative Team Set Designer: takis Costume Designer: takis Lighting Designer: Philip Gladwell Sound Designer: Christopher Shutt Digital video AV: Scott Radnor Director: Laurie Sansom Associate Director/Choreographer: Neil Bettles Composer: Dougal Irvine
The Bacchae in this modern adaptation consisted of five women from different centuries and places. The proposed costumes were worn, by the Bacchae women, during the chorus while Pentheas was being dressed in disguise by Dionysus. The five women, through the embodiment of Pentheas’ power suit (in different styles, made from the same material), were mocking the king Pentheas. This mirror imaging of Pentheas on the female bodies stressed the power of the Bacchae women under the influence of god Dio

02b. The Rover (2 photos submitted and a short video) The costumes of Don Antonio, Angelica, Moretta, Florinda, Don Pedro, Bellville, Helena and Willmore are proposed for submission for the exhibition
The costume design for this modern adaptation relied on the amalgamation of contemporary and baroque design influences on the pattern cutting, materiality, hair and make up. Wigs half Baroque half modern, baroque breeches made out of latex, period shirts made out of transparent materials (lace, voiles, nets). The audience were drawn, through the costumes and settings into a world of beauty, sensuality and danger. The Rover depicted a shocking world of unimaginable pleasures.

03a.Clytemnestra (2 photos submitted) Clytemnestra’s and Furies’ costumes are proposed for submission for the exhibition. Designer: takis Production Title: Clytemnestra by Gwyneth Lewis Performance Space: Sherman Theatre Theatre Company: Sherman Theatre Date: April – May 2012 Collaborative Team Set Designer: takis Costume Designer: takis Lighting Designer: Lee Curran Sound Designer: Simon Thorne Director: Amy Hodge Choreographer: Johan Stjernholm
The costume aimed to symbolically capture three aspects of her character through the cut, colour and materiality. The silver crushed satin, ‘acted’ as an armour protecting her whilst symbolising her strength. The woollen pleated insert symbolised her nature and her intertwined destiny. The red lace embellishments functioned as precursor of her revenge; placed on the skirt of the dress and on her hands, twisted around, like dripping blood, alluding to what was about to happen.

03b.Clytemnestra (2 photos submitted) Clytemnestra’s and Furies’ costumes are proposed for submission for the exhibition.Designer: takis Production Title: Clytemnestra by Gwyneth Lewis Performance Space: Sherman Theatre Theatre Company: Sherman Theatre Date: April – May 2012 Collaborative Team Set Designer: takis Costume Designer: takis Lighting Designer: Lee Curran Sound Designer: Simon Thorne Director: Amy Hodge Choreographer: Johan Stjernholm
The Furies in Gwyneth Lewis’ plot were the ancient psychic force that demanded the avenging murdered family. Both figures had a primitive relationship with language but gained embodiment and transformed the more they were listened to. They started as pre-linguistic and pre-figurative and as the revenge idea developed through the narrative, they began resembling fully formed characters. This was illustrated through the materiality of their costume, skin colour stretching net.

4.Measure for Measure (1 photos submitted) Isabella’s and Angelo’s costumes are proposed for submission for the exhibition, Designer: takis Production Title: Measure for Measure by William Shakespeare Performance Space: The Provincial, Cardiff Bay Theatre Company: Sherman Theatre Date: November – December 2011 Collaborative Team Set Designer: takis Costume Designer: takis Lighting Designer: Mark Howland Composer & Musical Director: Edward Lewis Director: Amy Hodge Movement Director: Lootie Johansen-Bibby Dramaturg: D J Britton
The underling theme of the play, the ‘power struggle between the sexes’, was illustrated through the costume designs which involved both layers of hedonism (lace, chains, nail polish, flesh) and devoutness (collars, robes, black and white). The design of the costume explored the ethics of the characters and played with the idea of hiding and revealing parts of their bodies signifying the juxtaposition of their actions and beliefs.
