150 years of Welsh Theatre Buildings in a day! – OISTAT Architecture Commission coach excursion
Sunday 8 Sept 09:00 Meet in the Foyer
South Wales has an incredible estate of theatre buildings built during the last 150 years by wealthy individuals, communities of working people and local and national Government bodies. This tour celebrated the greatest of these.
We visited the Park & Dare, Treorchy, paid for by salary sacrifice by mineworkers of the local colliery 100 years ago and the most ambitious community theatre ever built in Wales, the only Grade 1 listed theatre in Wales, the Adelina Patti Theatre at Craig-Y-Nos, built by opera diva Dame Adelina Patti to entertain her house guests at her Castle in the Swansea valley, Pontyberem Memorial Hall, a secret gem built to remember the sacrifice of the men from the village lost in the Great War and still serving its local community, Ffwrnes, Llanelli the newest theatre in South Wales opened in 2013, the Palace Theatre, Swansea the most at risk theatre building in Wales and Wales Millennium Centre opened 10 years ago and home to 8 of Wales leading Arts organisations and the World-Class Donald Gordon Theatre.
