Making the Superhuman through Costume with Vin Burnham

Costume designer Vin Burnham, whose body of work includes opera, ballet, film, TV and exhibitions, has created the Batsuit, the Penguin and Catwoman for Batman Returns and has worked extensively for Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

Her more recent work includes the Living Dress for Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball World Tour and in this session she shared some of the ideas inscribed in her work and  the processes she has devised and adapted.

Vin Burnham

Having begun her career at the Royal Opera House, Vin made costume for films such as Time Bandits, The Meaning of Life and Brazil.  Creature design with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop: The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Teenage Ninja Turtles and Never Ending Story.  She designed Asian The Lion for The Chronicles of Narnia, BBC.  Vin made the original Batsuit for Batman and was then responsible for The Penguin and Catwoman costumes for Batman Returns, and headed the costume effects team in The Fifth Element. She has more recently designed the (animatronic) Living Dress for Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball World Tour. Costume Design Credits include: Lost in Space, Dead Fish and the BBC’s Wind in the Willows.
