World Stage Design 2017 comes to Taiwan

World Stage Design 2017 will be hosted in Taipei by Taiwan Theatre Technology Association and Taipei National University of the Arts.

Taipei will be the fourth city that the quadrennial World Stage Design travels to, following Toronto (2005), Seoul (2009), and Cardiff (2013) since its inception in 2005.

The three contenders for World Stage Design 2017 included Beijing (CN), Vigan City (PH) and Taipei (TW). At the OISTAT World Congress held in conjunction with World Stage Design 2013 in Cardiff the merits of the three proposals were carefully reviewed and explored by OISTAT Executive Committee, and Taipai was announced as the host for the 2017 celebrations.

World Stage Design 2017 will also include Scenofest –  a celebration of theatre and live performance designs. Scenofest will include numerous workshops, presentations, performances, and forums for international theatre professionals and practitioners to come together and share ideas, discuss, and collaborate with each other.

Culture Minister Lung Ying-tai touted Taiwan’s strengths in design, saying several of the country’s designers were nominated for awards at World Stage Design 2013.

“That is where Taiwan’s vitality lies,” the Minister stated.

She said she hopes that hosting the event will help boost Taiwan’s visibility in the international community.

The theme for the 2017 event will be “Transformation,” which is intended to show the creative power of theatre art, said Wang Shih-hsin, an associate professor of theatrical design and technology who gave a presentation during Taiwan’s bid to host at the OISTAT congress last year.

The 2017 event will be held from July 1 to 9 at the Taipei National University of the Arts, and is expected to attract theatre experts and representatives from more than 50 countries.
